Graves

The duty to remember

Inaugural conference of the programme of cultural activities "The graves of Francoism. Archaeology, Anthropology and Memory", by Baltasar Garzón and Dolores Delgado, in collaboration with the Museum of Prehistory of Valencia and the Delegation of Historical Memory of the Provincial Council of Valencia.

Talking about the exhumation of graves from Franco's regime today inevitably leads us to talk about repression, but also about memories and forgetfulness, struggles and demands. In this lecture, we take a look at the mechanisms of elaboration, transmission and custody of the memories of Franco's repression sustained over time by families, especially women, and how this has led us in today's society to face the appearance on the public scene of bodies that were "badly buried" more than eighty years ago.

Baltasar Garzón (Jaén 1955) is a jurist who declared himself competent in 2008 to investigate in Spain the crimes committed by those responsible for the Franco regime between 1936 and 1951, including the crimes of forced disappearances of persons (illegal detentions without giving a reason for the victim's whereabouts) as permanent crimes in the context of crimes against humanity. This became known as the Historical Memory case.

Dolores Delgado (Madrid, 1962) is a public prosecutor. She has been Minister of Justice (2018-2020), Attorney General of the State (2020-2022) and is currently a prosecutor in the Prosecutor's Office of the Supreme Court.
