Preventive conservation and saponification ICOM

This audiovisual promoted by the Delegation of Historical Memory of the Diputación de València with the collaboration of L'ETNO explains the case of the saponification produced in the Fosa 111 of the cemetery of Paterna and the process of restoration and conservation of the exhumed materials.

Exceptionally, and thanks to the chemical process of saponification, a large quantity of clothing and footwear belonging to the victims of Franco's reprisals was preserved in grave 111. The exhumation led to the entry of oxygen, altering the environmental conditions and thus setting in motion a process of material degradation of the clothes. L'ETNO's team of technicians, in collaboration with the IRP (University Institute for Heritage Restoration), established a restoration and conservation protocol in order to be able to restore these items of clothing.
